Weekly work...

These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline each week.

First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.

Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS' PART THREE EACH WEEK.'

WEEK ONE BLOG ENTRY

WEEK ONE BLOG ENTRY (a reminder, in this section, you need to write your 250 word blog entry AND respond to two classmates)

Introduce yourself to the class.

You might consider some of the following questions: where are you from? What is your major?
Why are you taking an online course?
What is your favorite book?
What is your favorite food?
What is the farthest you have traveled from home?
What did you do over Winter Break?

Respond to any of these questions or anything else to tell us about yourself.

THEN, AFTER OTHERS HAVE RESPONDED, COME BACK TO THE BLOG AND RESPOND TO THEIR POSTS.

Remember, you may not wait until Saturday to do these posts. If you do that, you will not receive credit. The reason for that is that the blog is supposed to get you to write, read, write, in a community with others in our class. If you wait until Saturday, you are basically just writing to yourself. No one will really read what you write or respond to it--so write during the week.

  1. Hi, maybe some of us are being shy. This is where you will respond to the above questions. I can't wait to hear what you have to say!

  2. Hello,
My name is Noah Salinas and I am a junior here at CSUB. I am majoring in Business and minoring in Communications. I have a very busy schedule so I love the flexibility that online courses offer. This will be my fifth online course I have taken.

I currently work as a dance teacher at three different dance studios in Bakersfield as well as teach dance to after school programs in Elementary and Junior High schools. About a year and a half ago I started up a photo booth company and named it “Boomshakalaka Photo Booth” and have been doing that mainly as an additional weekend job. I never thought it would be as popular as it is right now, nor have I ever been to so many weddings in one month. Since my schedule fluctuates a lot, I really appreciate being able to take classes online.

Over the summer I took a trip to Europe for the first time. While there I visited Paris, Amsterdam and Germany. Each place was incredibly beautiful and I don't doubt that I will be back soon! They are very different destinations, but each of them is amazing. I loved to explore the other cultures and see how other people lived. As a side note to anyone who loves Mexican food, they barely have any Mexican food there! I am a huge Mexican food lover, so as soon as I got back I needed to get my fix.

I wish everyone good luck in this class and a great semester!

    1. Hey Noah!
I am so jealous that you got to take such an incredible trip! I am hoping to get across that little pond (Atlantic) some day soon. Thank you about the tip about the Mexican food, though I can't cook I do have to agree it is the best!
I love dance too! Though I am no where near professional, I did perform in a couple of our high school productions. I am curious if you grew up here. The production that I was in consisted of choreography written by one of our alumni Sasha Mallory, who now performs with Madonna!
Glad I could live vicariously through you!

    2. Hi Alex,
That is funny that you mention Sasha;I danced with her before she went on the show SYTYCD. That is so cool that you were in some of her productions. After traveling a little this year I seem to have caught the travel bug and encourage everyone to go see the world. I've only seen a glimpse of it, but it is amazing. Especially when you consider how new of a country America is.

    3. Hey Noah,
I, along with Alex, am so jealous of your incredible trip!
I also second that taking online courses help immensely with busy schedules.

Do you plan on having your own dance business as soon as you obtain your bachelors?

How long have you worked as a dance teacher? and what type of music do you teach? I have a friend who is a big dancer and music lover, she especially loves bachata. She's conducted many choreographies for Granite Point Elementary after school program.

In response to your advice about mexican food, that is a good tip to know. If I ever go on my dream trip to Europe, I will make sure to eat as many tacos and enchiladas as I can before I go!

  3. Hello!
My name is Alexandra White and I will be graduating in the spring. My major is Sociology with a minor in Criminal Justice. I love learning about people and truly believe that if you can understand people and society you can be successful in any career. I am a shift supervisor at Starbucks and it takes up most of my time, which is why I am taking this class online. It is the first online course that I have taken, so I am a little nervous about remembering to complete the tasks.
I recently got married and have had so much fun getting to explore the world with my husband. We spent a week in Jamaica, which has to be the highlight of my year, and I am in the midst of trying to convince him of the necessity of a graduation trip. I love to travel and hope to see more of the world every year. I love to read about the different cultures globally and hope to get to experience them myself, but my reading isn’t limited to academia!
I love to read and my most current book is Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. I love the suspense and darkness of her novels and appreciate the twists and turns throughout her books. Stephen King is also a favorite of mine, but mostly because of the few great movie adaptations. Along with books I consider myself somewhat of a movie buff. I have taken many film courses and appreciate the art of film making. There are so many films that this generation will miss out on simply because they aren’t filled with constant action. The 1931 film “M” directed by Fritz Lang is a perfect example of a now hidden gem.
I look forward to better my writing skills this quarter and completing my first online course.

    1. Hi Alexandra! Glad to hear you are close to graduating. I too am graduating in the spring, and can not wait to start teaching. I completely agree with what you said about understanding people in order to become successful in any career, and is something I think many people don't realize. I too like to read books on my spare time, and Stephen King's work is quite enjoyable. The Mist was one of my favorite stories, and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie adaptation. I don't really watch movies that often, but I'll check out the one you recommended as a hidden gem. I'm glad to hear your trip to Jamaica was a success; I hope to visit Jamaica sometime as I've never really traveled outside of the state, and it sounds like a wonderful place for a vacation. Hope you have a wonderful rest of the quarter!

    2. Hey Alexandra! I am glad to hear about your passion for understanding the way the people think and the way society works. With more people willing to focus on this I believe that everyone would be more able to adapt and function in society. Although your major and minor are really cool, I chose to reply to your comment because I wanted to congratulate you on your marriage! My spring and summer were just filled with weddings and it was such a fun time! I love watching my newly married family members grow together and enjoy each other so I hope that you are doing the same. I wish you luck on convincing your husband of a graduation trip! I don't know the cultures that you are interested in, but I really enjoyed my trip to Alaska last summer. It does not seem that culturally different, but talking to some of the people that lived there was really fascinating to me because their world is set up so differently than ours here in California. Thanks for sharing a little bit about yourself with us, and I hope that you are having a great week!

  4. Hello, my name is Jesse Ortiz and I am a senior here at CSUB. I am majoring in Liberal Studies in order to become an elementary school teacher. I've only taken one other online course, but I loved the flexibility it provided to my schedule. Balancing time between school, work, gym and life can become troublesome, so I've found online classes to be the optimal solution.

I am currently a full-time student at CSUB and will be graduating next spring. One of my hobbies is reading, and is something I can do for hours. My favorite book right now is titled Double Luck: Memoirs of a Chinese Orphan. In this book, the author tells us about his life living in China before he moved to the United States. The story was really touching, and when I learned the author owned a restaurant here in California, I just had to go to it. About a month later, I traveled to Morro Bay with my family to go try out The Coffee Pot Restaurant, but sadly he wasn't there the day I went to visit; however, the food was absolutely amazing. Omelets are one of my favorite foods, and I was really satisfied with the green chili omelets served there.

The farthest I've traveled from home would be when I went to San Jose for a Pokemon VGC event. I’ve never really gone far from home, but I made an exception here because the regional tournament was being held up north that year. VGC stands for video game competition for those that don't know. The event was a lot of fun even though I got 112th place out of 250 people, and it lasted the whole weekend. Playing Pokemon competitively with my friends is another of my hobbies and one I've enjoyed doing for several years now. During this past winter break I went to a few other Pokemon events in the Los Angeles area, but nothing too big. It's a very interesting and fun game that I would highly recommend to others.

    1. Hi Jesse,

I am majoring in Liberal Studies and want to become an elementary school teacher also! That is exciting to be graduating soon! What grade are you wanting to teach?

The Double Luck: Memoirs of a Chinese Orphan sounds interesting. It is amazing to hear stories about people who come from different countries and then come to live in the United States. Their lives are changed and have the opportunity to have an education or even establish a restaurant.

I enjoyed reading your blog and nice to meet you!

    2. Hi Brittany, I plan on teaching 4th or 5th grade because that is the age group I've had the most experience working with and really enjoy. The book Double Luck really is inspiring and I highly recommend it if you ever have the time to read it. I also recommend visiting the author's restaurant. All of the food is really good plus you get a good view of Morro Bay. Thank you for reading my blog, and it was nice meeting you!

    3. Hi Jesse,

I also enjoyed reading your Blog. I was very fortunate to meet Lu Chi Fa, the author of Double Luck: Memoirs of a Chinese Orphan; he was a guest speaker at Taft College. I really enjoy reading the book because his story was inspirational in many ways and also because he was able to overcome many challenges.
I’m sorry, that you did not get the chance to meet author Lu Chi Fa, but according to the English Department at Taft College, Lu Chi Fa is a guest speaker at least once a semester, so maybe you can get to meet him.
I wish you good luck in your classes and major.

  5. Hello, my name is Brittany Arevalo and I am a junior here at CSUB. I am from Delano, CA which is about 30-45 minutes away from Bakersfield. I commute here to school and work about four days a week. My major is Liberal Studies. I was a History major and I was planning on teaching high school, but plans changed. I have always had a passion for teaching. So, I recently started teaching Sunday school at my church and began teaching 2nd to 4th grade. I loved it! I changed my major to Liberal Studies earlier this year and found that I love teaching younger children.

I am taking an online course, because it is more convenient with my schedule this quarter. I have a busy schedule throughout the week. I have taken several other online classes and found them to be flexible and the best option. I love to read articles, magazines, books (non-fictional & fictional), short stories, and sometimes poetry. I have been taught from past educators to "read everything and read all the time!"

I have never traveled outside of California sadly. One day, I hope to visit France, Italy, Greece, and Germany. Over summer break, I stayed at beach house for a week. My family and I went to Cayucos, CA. I also went camping and kayaking at Shaver Lake and hiked at the Sequoias National Park. California can be beautiful too :)

I am looking forward to this class and meeting all of you.

    1. Hi Brittany,
At least you were able to find something you enjoy doing instead of settle for something else. You are so right that California can be beautiful! I think it is the best of both worlds and is so diverse, who wouldn't love it here? You should definitely go see the world and travel, it is so amazing and so much different than it is here. I wish you good luck in this class and nice to meet you!

    2. Hi Brittany, nice to meet you! I wanted to become a high school teacher also for math but I decided it was best to obtain my multiple subject and my credential first before I decided solely on teaching high school because I love working with younger kids too. I actually used to be a sunday school teacher at my church as well but unfortunately I was unable to volunteer this year because of my work schedule. We're all busy now, but later on hopefully we'll all have the chance to explore the various places we wish to!
I hope you have a great quarter!

  6. BLOG POST FROM CLEM...
Hello to all. My given name is Michael Clem but I simply go by Clem. It’s stuck with me through high school, military, and civilian life. It’s has a functionality about it as well, less letters to spell.

I’m looking forward to our conversations over this quarter. I’m taking the online course as an equivalent to the GWAR. I would have rather been able to pass the specific test, but I’m optimistic about what we’ll all learn here. Writing and the more important effective communicating by writing is not my strong suit. I’m more a visual person.

Now I don’t have a favorite book, I like books I read and they stay with me for a while then pass from memory only to be recalled if a situation arises that relates. In that sense they are useful and become a favorite in that instance.

My favorite food has always been pizza. I mean it’s food in the form of a plate and you can eat the plate. I prefer a standard onion, bell pepper, and olive creation. One can get creative by switching up the marinara sauce for white sauce. I don’t know if the standard white sauce is always Alfredo, so you may have to check.

My journey has taken me to places like Panama, Mexico, and Canada. I have yet to make that trans-Atlantic but my wife and I are dreaming of that trip. We have a home in the Philippines but, my wife has only been able to visit/stay there. I’m looking forward to possibly spending the winter break in the Philippines (fingers crossed).

Over the summer I worked REVS-Up and conducted research under Dr. Pratt in the plant physiological lab. I work on four projects for research that include carbohydrate store in different tissues, imaging for analysis of vessel lengths, and a competition study between a native forb and invasive grass. The current research is an Island-Mainland study comparing “like” species secondary metabolites.

Let’s all have a great quarter, and write strong.

  7. Hello, my name is Karina Villanueva and I am 21 years old. I was born in Mexicali, Baja California and came to the United States when I was 8 years old. So I have lived in Bakersfield practically my whole life. I am a Child and Adolescent Family Studies Major and my minor is Organizational Studies. I will be finished with my bachelors this fall and I plan to pursue my single subject credentials in the winter. My long term goal is to become an elementary school teacher and also one day be able to manage and own a business. I am taking an online course because it works with my busy schedule. I am very involved on campus and I am currently taking 25 units so this online class really allows for flexibility. I don’t have a favorite food but I do LOVE chips. I can seriously have a bag every single day. The farthest I have traveled is to Mexico City two summers ago, but I would love to one day be able to travel to Paris and Tokyo. My summer break consisted of working and hanging out with friends on my free time. Unfortunately, I was only working part time so I wasn’t able to save up as much money as I would have liked but at least I did have a lot of free time to relax and take a break from the school work. I attended some of my close friends’ birthday celebrations and I also recently went to Las Vegas.

    1. Hey Karina! I am so glad that you are in this class! I am also a CAFS major, but I have a minor in Psychology. What was the Organizational Studies minor like? The classes looked interesting to me but I ended up not taking any of them. Sadly, I won't graduate until the spring, but good luck taking 25 units this quarter! I am only taking 20 and I already feel overwhelmed looking at all the assignment. Out of your entire post, I love how you said chips are your favorite food! I seriously eat chips as a meal some days. What is your favorite type of chips? Mine is chipotle tortilla chips with avocados or any kind of salt and vinegar chips! Thanks for sharing with us a little bit about yourself. Hope to hear from you again soon!

    2. Hello Karina! It's interesting to meet someone born outside of the United States! I too plan on becoming an elementary school teacher after I graduate. Do you know which grade you are wanting to teach? I do find it funny that your favorite food is chips. I too wish to someday travel to Japan, it's the only place me and my girlfriend wish to travel to. Well thanks for sharing! Hope to hear/read from you again!

    3. @ Janel Self I honestly like almost all kinds of chips the only ones I don't like are funyuns, but if I had to pick my favorite one I think I would go Chester's Flaming Hot Fries. I'm glad we have something in common in that we both like chips. I'm taking management classes because I hope to one day be able to own my own business and so far I really like the classes because they teach you how to address your employees and strategies to implement to have a successful business.

    6. Karina, that is a really interesting combination or classes and goals! What kind of business would you want to own? With a major in CAFS I assume it has something to do with children. And I have never heard of those chips but even the name is making my mouth water! A trip to the grocery story may be in order! Hope to hear from you again soon. Have a great weekend.

    7. Hello Karina,
First of all let me start off with saying that I love knowing that their is someone who is a CAFS major as well as I am. At the community college I attended I rarely met CAFS, social studies or liberal art majors. The majority were Nursing majors so I was usually hearing people complain about their anatomy classes while I was excited about my sociology and psychology classes. I also want to wish you good luck on your credential program and in your 25 units that you are taking. After reading that you said you were taking all those units even I feel a bit stressed. Just try to focus and try to manage your time wisely and I'm sure you will be able to succeed oh and also do not forget coffee it will help you get through the day (haha). Well I wish you the best in this class and in your career and I hope you do get to travel I know a few girls that recently visited Tokyo and they said it was beautiful.

    8. Hi Karina,
you are one busy woman and I thought taking 20 units was a load! I've never heard of chips being someone's favorite thing to eat, but it makes sense when you have that much workload.
My mother was an elementary teacher, she truly loved it! Do you know what grade you want to teach?
I hope to hear from you and I wish you good luck this quarter

  8. Hi!
My name is Sylvia Castrejon. I was born and raised here in Bakersfield, California. I am 21 years old and a senior at CSUB. I am happy to say that I will be graduating in the spring with a major in Liberal Studies. I hope to become an elementary teacher for young children. My goal is to inspire children to find their great potential and be successful in life. Educating children has always been my dream career. Becoming an elementary teacher would mean that I have to set the foundations of learning and teach them the importance of education. These ideas make me exciting to start to my career in teaching. I am extremely passionate about making my students grow.

I am taking an online course because I work full time and most importantly, I am a wife and mother to a beautiful family. My only daughter was born this year in February and I get the opportunity to watch her grow every day. She amazes me with her curiosity to try new things. This online course allows me to work at my own pace on my own time. Online classes also teach us how to manage our time. I have taken several online courses and enjoy them very much.

Cancun, Mexico is the farthest I have traveled away from home. I have been fortunate enough to go two times for summer vacations in the past years. Every summer, my family and I travel together to spend quality time before the school year starts. My most memorable experiences are the beach days. The beaches are completely different than they are in LA. The water is at a perfect temperature to get inside and the weather is nice and warm. If I could choose anywhere to be in this world it would be in Cancun.

    1. Hi Sylvia,
At times, I think about majoring in Liberal Studies but Biology is my passion.
I also enjoy helping students, I am currently a Health Care Specialist Substitute for elementary schools at Taft. I get to work with many students, it is a great job to be able to educate students because you feel that you are making a difference in the world for future generations to come.

I enjoyed reading your blog because it reminded me that education is very important. I know that you will be a great teacher and wish you the best. in your future career.

    2. Hi Sylvia,

I also have the same passion when educating young children. I agree with Yesica, they are the future generation and feel that every teacher has the opportunity to make a difference in each and every students' lives. I believe you have great potential to become an amazing teacher!

Good luck in the class and nice to meet you!

    3. Hi Yesica,
You are doing what you love. You are working in a field that is similar to biology and also getting a chance to work with young children. Education is very important in the lives of young children. I'd love to be able to make a great impact in their lives.

  9. Hello, my name is Yesica Salazar I am from Riverside, California. I currently transferred, from Taft College and this will be my first year at CSUB. My major is Human Biology; I decided to pursue Biology because I was intrigued and inspired by the concept of wildlife and the environment. I am taking this online course because it is a requirement to complete the GWAR and because it worked out with my schedule.
My favorite book would be The Giver by Lois Lowry because the book dealt with many concepts that had to do with pain, loss, happiness, regret, and memories. The Giver was the first novel that I read that portrayed many concepts that other novels did not mention. The Giver inspired me to enjoy other novels.
My favorite food is Tacos de Asada with Coca Cola especially if they are from Ensenada, Baja California. The farthest I have traveled from home is to Salt Lake City, Utah. During my stay at salt lake city, I got to enjoy and experience the environment by going hiking and camping with my family at the Donut Falls Trail, it was one of the best places to travel.
During my break, I decided to work and take a summer class at CSUB. When summer school was over I went on vacation to Ensenada, Baja California. During my vacation at Ensenada, I got to spend most of my time at the beach exploring wildlife, going to La Bufadora, visiting family members, and having a great time.

I also read “The Giver” when I was a freshman in high school. I enjoyed the book very much as well because it dealt with a character of my age. The ideas behind the book were something that I had never read before. I could also say that it inspired me to read other books.
My family and I always eat tacos with a coca cola or horchata! I loved reading your blog because it reminded me of my Hispanic culture and traditions.
Good luck on all that you do at CSUB!

  10. Hi, my name is Janel, and I am a senior here at CSUB with my major as CAFS and my minor as Psychology. I grew up here in Bakersfield, and I am currently working as the assistant children's pastor at Bakersfield First Assembly of God. I am overloaded in units this quarter in order to finish by spring, and because of my work schedule I was unable to fit in another on campus class, hence forth the online class.
I love to read so picking a favorite book is not easy for me; however, Dee Henderson is my favorite "fun reading" author. I would consider almost any book written by her to be my favorite. My favorite classic literature book is "Frankenstein." My favorite food has probably been Chipotle ever since the first one opened here in Bakersfield! Although I don't remember much about this trip, the farthest that I have ever traveled from home was my trip to London when I was five years old.
My sumer was more work than fun. Over the summer I completed the last eight online courses in Berean Bible School that I needed in order to be a certified pastor. On top of the classes, I was working to plan multiple outreaches and fun events for the kids in our church. Although work and school were crazy, I did have time to go to the beach twice with my family and take a trip to San Francisco with my sister and brother-in-law.
I am looking forward to getting a chance to get to know all of you, and I hope to read some of your responses soon! Thanks everyone!

    1. Nice to meet you Janel,
Your blog caught my attention because the words "Psychology" and "CAFS" were the first words I came across when I scrolled by. We are a bit backwards because I am a Psych Major and CAFS minor, but it seems that you are also pursuing a career in working with children after graduation? I honestly think that you being a pastor is the most interesting thing ever. If you don't mind me asking, what do you plan on doing with your bachelors in CAFS afterwards?

You are one busy student. Do not let the units scare you and just make sure you manage your time well. By doing this there is no doubt that you will do great this quarter!

During the summer I also went to San Francisco. It was my first time and I fell so in love with the weather. The humidity not so much, but everything else about it was beautiful, except traffic lol.

I really enjoyed reading your blog and look forward to reading those in the future to come.

    2. Hi Patrica! I love it when I meet people with similar majors and minors as me. As a CAFS major, I am able to enter the credential program since I have already passed my multiple subject CSETs. Because I will be a licensed pastor and a licensed elementary school teacher I have not yet decided what I am going to do when I graduate. I would love to be an upper elementary school teacher, but I love my job as a pastor too! Getting to see the kids eyes light up when they learn about how much God loves than and watching them grow in their relationship with Him certainly makes this my favorite job I have ever had. What are you planning to do with your degree after you graduate? And yup I am certainly very busy. I am currently taking a break from reading my second 300 page good of the quarter and then writing a research paper on it by the 30th! And I do really enjoy San Francisco's weather. Did you grow up in Bakersfield? I fell like people who grew up here love to go places that are foggy and rainy. Sadly the week I was there had beautiful weather much like yesterday and today, which was nice but not what I was prepared for! Hope you are having a great start to the quarter. I will look for your posts on our future assignments!

    3. That's amazing! There will be so many opportunities for you having experience as a teacher and pastor. I am sure there are many different careers that you can pursue also that involve education and bible study. I could only imagine how rewarding it is to know that you are making a difference in children's lives and being the first to introduce them to religion and God. I think it is a great start to a positive life.

During my last quarters at CSUB, I will be applying to multiple graduate programs here in town, Los Angeles, and the Fresno area. I am determined to receive my masters in School Psychology. I am aiming towards staying here in town, but will not hesitate to accept any opportunities outside of Bakersfield.

I am originally from Long Beach, but I moved to Bakersfield when I was about ten. I do enjoy taking trips out of town and love the rain. I am even more excited that fall is right around the corner. Fall and Winter are my favorite seasons.

So far everything is going great. I am a little nervous about my social psychology lab, but I know if I work hard and stay on top of everything, I will do just fine.
I appreciate your kind words. I wish you the same!

    4. Patricia, good luck with applying for the graduate programs! I agree with you that the cold weather is the best time of year. Hopefully we will get a lot of rain this winter. It makes doing homework much more fun when I can sit on the patio listening to the rain falling instead of sweating to death. Hope you are having a great start to the weekend, and I will look for you post again next week.

  11. Hello everyone,
My name is Patricia Scoggan and this is my first quarter as a senior at CSUB. I’ve lived in Bakersfield for about twelve years now and am originally from Long Beach, CA. I am majoring in Psychology with a Minor in CAFS and am headed towards graduate school to pursue my dream of becoming a School Psychologist.
The main reason I am taking this online course is because I will receive credit for the GWAR. I originally wanted to take the exam rather than the course, but I fell short in my units for graduation because I double counted a few of my courses. I am looking forward to this course and hoping to refresh my writing skills. I believe English 305 will be beneficial because it will help prepare me for the CBEST exam that I will be taking in December. This exam contains two timed essays that I will have to complete. Once I pass, I will be eligible to substitute for the school districts.
I really enjoy reading books by Nicholas Sparks and John Green. Since I have to choose one, I would have to say my favorite book is "A Walk to Remember" by Nicholas Sparks. In regards to food, I love all food and will eat anything. My top favorites are Rib-eye steak, pizza, and shrimp. I am a pretty adventurous person, but haven’t had the chance to travel anywhere too far from home. The furthest I have gone is Las Vegas.
During the summer I took my first summer class (Abnormal Psych). When summer school came to an end, I was able to do a couple fun things before returning back this fall. For my boyfriend’s 21st birthday in July, we went to Vegas for three nights and four days. This was a first time for us both and now I understand why people say ,“it’s addicting”. As a birthday gift to him, I surprised him with sky diving in San Diego. It was the most AMAZING experience of my whole life! This August was also my 22nd birthday. I am a big fan of country music (especially Luke Bryan) and was able to experience his kick the dust up tour at Levi stadium in San Francisco. Performing at this concert was Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, Thomas Rhett, Dustin Lynch, and Randy Houser. It was a blast and I was even more satisfied because our seats were in the Pit right in front of the stage. Other than that, I worked and spent time with friends and family. This summer was one to remember for me and I look forward to having an amazing rest of the year. I wish everyone the best of luck this quarter and cant wait to see you all in person on Oct 10th!

    1. Hi Patricia!

It's awesome seeing someone else majoring in Psychology! It's also really cool that you want to be a school psychologist. I have not yet decided what to do with my major. I should figure it out quick! I have also seen Luke Bryan in concert. I saw him with Cole Swindell and Lee Brice last year in a town called Concord by San Francisco. I also got to explore the city while I was there. He was a total blast, right? Also, I am extremely jealous of your skydiving adventure! I have been considering going sky diving with my boyfriend as well lately. I know it is offered in Taft, but it sounds like it would be a much better experience by the beach. I also want to suggest the rib-eye at Lucille's Smokehouse in the mall. I work there, and I think it is to die for. It's so good. Thanks for sharing about yourself!

    2. Hey Carly,

I agree with you! I love meeting other psych majors.

What year are you in at CSUB?
Don't feel obligated to choose now. It took me a long time to decide what I really wanted to do for the rest of my life. Originally I wanted to be a police officer and later on move into investigations. When I took child psych with professor Rude, that was when my whole interest switched. I realized that I wanted to do something that would impact the lives of children.

YES! I also went to the That's my kind of night tour at the hollywood bowl last October. It was also Luke Bryan, Cole Swindell, and Lee Brice. I have to say though, the performance at Levi Stadium blew me out of the water. The stadium is huge and they put on a really neat fireworks show. We ended up staying at the Santa Clarita Hilton which is about a five minute walking distance to the stadium. It was nice not getting jammed in traffic.

I would highly recommend to anyone that they go out and experience sky diving. I was a little nervous before our jump, but it was not the scary that I imagined it to be. It actually was not scary at all. I was thinking about doing Taft at first, but I thought "if I am going to be jumping out of a plane, I might as well make sure the view is well worth it". The whole thing was perfect. We jumped at pacific coast skydiving. The really neat thing is that they give you a nice tour over the ocean where you can see everything including the Mexican border. If you do it, you need to make sure you get a video! I am so glad that my boyfriend and I purchased ours, it's hilarious.

My friend Faby used to work there. She is my gym partner as well! Very small world.
I will need to try it.

It was nice meeting you Carly. Good luck this quarter!

  12. Hello Class! My name is Maegan I am 21 years old. This is my fourth, senior, year at CSUB. I am a Liberal Studies major for special education with a concentration in math. I currently work at Noting Bundt Cakes on Coffee Road, Loudon Elementary as an instructional aide, and I also have my own cake pop “business”. Working 55 hours a week, going to school full time (as well as another online class at BC), and rolling cake balls all night doesn’t leave my schedule with very much flexibility. Online courses allow me the extra time to organize my tasks and allow me to schedule my own homework and studying periods when most convenient for myself.

I don’t have a solid #1 favorite book but I do enjoy reading and can easily get hooked on a story. History and science books…not so much. Though I do have to say I have taken Dr. Schmoll for two history classes and he was amazing and made history so much more enjoyable! I don’t have much free time to read anymore, one of my favorite authors is Nicholas Sparks. Yes I know, cheesy unrealistic love stories probably written at 8th grade reading level, but they’re so sweet and give me a good happy ending when I need one.

I like a variety of foods from different cultures; some of my favorites are Philipino, Mexican, and Greek. Which also brings me to my traveling history. I went to the Philippines when I was six years old so unfortunately I don’t remember very much of my trip but more recently I have traveled in Europe playing soccer in small parts of Switzerland, Denmark, and Sweden. I love to travel and I hope to explore other countries as much as I can throughout my lifetime! But I’m positive I have exceeded a 250 word count, I look forward to learning more about you guys and I wish everyone the best of luck and success in our course and our future careers! ☺

    1. Hi Maegan,

You are one busy person. I find it interesting how you make time to do all that and still bake. Baking seems like its so time consuming and you manage to do so much, and still managing your own your own cake pop business. That's pretty amazing and inspiring. I thought I was extremely busy with a baby, work full time, and school full time but now reading about all that you do makes me seem not so busy...

Another thing we have in common is reading novels by Nicholas Sparks, like you said the romance fantasies, and happy ending are there when we need them. What really amazes me is your traveling to Europe and playing soccer over seas that's beyond amazing!! You seem like a very outgoing person and I really enjoyed you blog.

    2. Hello Meagan,

I really give you props for taking on all the responsibilities you have. I honestly don't know how you do it. I can imagine that you sacrifice a lot of sleep to get all of these things handled. I as well like to travel all though I haven't visited many places I hope to visit more soon. I can tell you are very devoted which is a great equability to have. I wish you the best this quarter.

  13. Hello my name is Jeanette Martinez and I am a senior at CSUB. I’m 22 years old but in a few more weeks I will be turning 23. I am a CAFS major with a minor in Sociology. I plan to apply for grad school this winter quarter. I want to get my masters in either counseling or social work and work as either a CPS licensed worker or a college counselor. I’m a bit undecided still but I hope that the internship’s I am applying for will give me a better idea of what it is I like more and am more interested in. I have traveled along the states to visit some family members that I have scattered around but I am happy to say that in this upcoming summer I will be visiting Greece with two of my cousins as our graduation gift. So far the farthest I have traveled has been to Cancun, Mexico.
This class will be my third online course. I’m always nervous when it comes to taking online courses because I fear that at times I may not be able to understand the material online. I like to be crafty on my spare time or do some baking or reading. I have been reading since I was in elementary school and I still remember the first book I read that meant a lot to me was a book from the author Lurlene McDaniel. Not only do I enjoy reading but I also enjoy tutoring people in math. I went from being an engineering major to a math major to a CAFS major and I can say it was because I was constantly being discouraged. Although now that I have taken many CAFS classes and sociology classes I know I am headed to the right path with being able to help the people me. I looked forward to this class and I wish you all the best

    1. Hi Jeanette,

Great to have you in the class and its awesome to hear others considering graduate school. Interesting major, CFAS, is that a certain type of counselor program?. People who can effectively guide and help people on their path are amazing individuals. I’m a bit jealous to learn of your Greece trip (ha ha). Traveling is so much fun, and to be able to see all the architecture should be educational. This is my first online course here at CSUB and I share in the nervous tension about getting everything in and on time. Once we get the first week down I’m sure it will get better.

    2. HI Jeanette must be exciting to be a senior, your almost there... How interesting how you want to work with CPS I want to do the same thing. Not many people choose that career due to all the horrific things we may come across but It takes lots of courage and that's amazing. Being nervous about online classes is normal I felt the same way but you seem very dedicated and that has a lot to do with your success. I wish you the best with your career.

    3. Hello Jeanette,

I am also a CAFS major with a minor in Organizational Studies. I know exactly what you mean when you say you want to help people. I feel the same way this is why I chose CAFS as my major I want to be able to work with students and parents to help them succeed in life. To me there is no greater satisfaction then being able to help others and watch them thrive. I'm so glad to hear you are taking a vacation to Greece after you gradate that sounds like so much fun. Greece sounds like an amazing place to visit hopefully I get it visit one day. Good luck on all your classes this quarter and remember when things get stressful and you feel like giving up just think about your graduation and rewarding trip to Greece.

    4. Hey Michael,

Well yes I must agree with you there is nervous tension when it comes to online courses. I'm always afraid to think that I might not understand the material or will not be able to receive the help I need especially since I am more of a visual learner. Well to answer your question CAFS is my major and it stands for (Children, Adolescent and Family Studies) but I am still undecided about what exactly it is I want to pursue in Grad school. I'm both interested in becoming a social worker for child protective services or working as a health care social work for children and parents who are affected with chronic disease. I am more interested in Social work but a lot of people tell me that it becomes difficult and saddening to deal with but hopefully internships will help me figure out what my best shot might be. I'm am ecstatic about my trip to Greece although I am not going to lie I am so nervous especially since I'm use to traveling with my family. I always worry that I might get lost or will not know my way around. If there is one thing about me that I myself know is that I am very paranoid.

    5. Hi Jeanette!

I am also a CAFS major. I used to be PYSC major, but change because I also felt like it wasn't for me. Once I went to CAFS class I fell in love. It was so easy for me to understand in my classes and I actually looked forward to going to class. I'll be quite honest with you though, when I did conver to CAFS I was sure what I wanted to do, all I knew is I wanted to help children. I personally went to my high school and talked to a few staff members to give me ideas. I ran into a speech pathologist and instantly chose my career path. The internships are definitely going to help! Good luck!

  14. Hello classmates!

My name is Carly Beasley. I just turned 20, and I am a junior here. I am currently majoring in psychology, but that may change in the future. I feel like it's hard to decide what you want to do with the rest of your life so soon! I don't know how others do it, but I am in awe.

My summer break consisted of many Disneyland trips because I have an annual pass. I mean, it seemed necessary considering it is the happiest place on earth. I also went to several concerts. Nothing is more exciting to me than the anticipation before a really great concert.

Along with my fascination with concerts, I thoroughly enjoy movies. I have almost 250 movies in my bedroom with me right now! I don't have a favorite genre because I really love them all. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a laugh and sometimes I'm in the mood for a good cry. I also do love reading. I probably read close to 30 books over the summer. I really had too much free time.

I have not done much traveling in my lifetime. I am extremely jealous of other people's adventures in other countries! I have been obsessed with Paris since I was little, and I even took 3 years of French in high school. That will be my first stamp on my passport.

I am taking this class online instead of taking the test because I needed some extra units for this quarter. I need to be a full time student to keep my scholarships. I usually try to take two in class courses and one online. This gives me more flexibility with scheduling, and I really enjoy it this way. I am looking forward to seeing what is ahead in this class. It is great meeting all of you! ☺

    1. Hello Carly,
My name is Katherine and I struggled picking my major as well, bounced around a few times before I settled on math. I don't think any person ever picked their final major the first time. Sounds like you had an awesome summer, full of excitement. Sadly I'm 23 and have never been to Disneyland. I use to read as much as you do but work so much that I've not be able to read as much as I would like. I really hope you get to go to France, just keep saving and I'm sure you'll get to travel. Maybe it could be you graduation present to yourself.

    2. Hello Carly, I completely agree with you and Katherine. It is very hard sticking to one major and not changing. Surprisingly, I have stuck to Criminal Justice since I started school at Moorpark College and now am pursuing my CJ bachelor's degree at CSUB. I also took a lot of trips to Disneyland this summer. My fiance and I have had the annual pass for a few years now. When is your favorite time to go? I like going in the summer but honestly it gets very hot and the crowds are huge! I would much rather go during the winter when all the holiday decorations are up and when the weather is much cooler.

  15. Hello everyone,
Sorry for the late post, I was having trouble setting up my student email but after the help from the IT help desk on campus I'm finally in. My Name is Katherine Reedy, I've only lived here in Bakersfield for 2 years and I'm 23 years old. I'm a math major and taking this course to satisfy the GRAW requirement to graduate. Hopefully I'll be graduated in a year and half as long as thing go according to plan.

During the summer since I wasn't in school I worked about three different jobs a day. I believe I enjoyed doing absolutely nothing for about a week after finals before I got bored and started filling my time with what ever I could find. I'm so happy to be back in school with a full schedule. I'm taking 18 units this quarter, 14 of those units are math classes and then this class. I chose to take this class as an online course because I work 2 jobs during school and taking the 3 math classes doesn't leave time for me to squeeze another class during the week. The online class allow me to work on this course when I have short breaks between work or school.

The two jobs I keep during the school year is my math tutoring and my land surveying jobs. I hope to be a teacher one day and truly love that job. Most of my students are in high school but I do have the occasional college student every now and then. I have completely finished all the calculus classes and I've begun working on my upper division math. I also love my land surveying job because it's completely outdoors. Most of the work I do is in the oil fields but despite believe the guys in the oil fields are really nice and polite.

My boyfriend is in the military and is stationed on the east coast so I try to go visit him during school breaks as to not fall behind in my course work. I'be been to Boston, several parts in Colorado, New York, Arizona and New Hampshire. I hope to do much more traveling and save most of the money I make from working all my jobs to do that. I look forward to meeting you all in October.

    1. Hi Katherine!

I hope you're having a wonderful weekend! Welcome back to CSUB!

I truly have to say that I was inspired and moved by your post. As a member of student government on campus, I try to reach out to all students to represent their needs and answer any questions or concerns they might have. However, because of your busy schedule, it seems that you won't have time to get involved on campus.

Although this news makes me sad, you serve as an important reminder of why the CSU system is so important to students across the state. You, as well as other students in the CSU system, shall graduate and go on to a bright future. It might be tough now, but it will all be worth it in the end.

Good luck with all your endeavors. I'm glad that you're in the class!

  16. Hello classmates,
My name is Jennifer Rodriguez; I’m twenty years old and a mother to a handsome five month old boy. I was born and raised here in Bakersfield, but I did spend a couple years living in Lamont as a child. I recently graduated from Bakersfield College with an AA in Sociology and now I’m attending my first quarter here at CSUB as a junior. My plan is to receive my bachelor’s in Sociology and a minor in Criminal Justice, and I'm also planning to get my Masters in social work. I plan to be a social worker with either Child Protective Services, or Juveniles. I’m taking this online course because it’s a requirement to graduate, and I work full time so this course fits my schedule well.
I do enjoy reading and one of my favorite authors has to be Nicholas Sparks, I couldn’t pick a favorite because I enjoy all of his books. Apart from reading I enjoy playing sports and going to the gym. One of my favorite foods has to be Italian, pastas are my favorite. The furthest I’ve traveled has been to New York and it was the best experience ever. Over the summer I spent lots of time with my son, we went to Huntington Beach and since he’s a summer baby he enjoyed it very much. I also went hiking to Yosemite National Park. If you love nature and haven’t been there I suggest it, it was beyond beautiful.
I’m looking to forward to this course, and I can’t wait to meet you all.

    1. Hi Jennifer!

I've heard working in Child Protective Services can be really hard because of how often you work in sad and tough situations. I don't think I would be able to do it. Major props to you for being determined to work towards something like that! I do enjoy nature and hiking! I have hiked several places in Oregon, Washington, Lake Tahoe, and a few places around Bakersfield, but I have yet to make the journey to the Yosemite. What trail did you take? I've been looking up some of their trails over the summer. Now I will have to go some weekend since I know other people have enjoyed it so much! I'm amazed at how you can juggle school, a full time job, and a child. Sometimes I feel like I can barely handle school and my part time job. Good luck to you in achieving your goals!

    2. Hello Jennifer! I have worked for the department of Child Support Services and although CPS and CSS isn't exactly the same I think the act of helping out families and children is really rewarding. I debated whether I should minor in psychology or sociology but ultimately chose psychology.

I also think it's awesome that you went hiking to Yosemite National Park. I wanted to do that this summer but didn't get the chance too, maybe next summer I will take some time to do so.

    3. Hello Jennifer,
After reading your about me I feel like we are soul sisters (haha). I see that you also want to work with child protective services and I think that is great especially since you will helping many children who come from broken homes or a horrific environment. I have a cousin who is trying to convince me to move to Texas, she tells me that social workers and CPS agents are needed especially in the boarder land. She insist that I move to Texas since there is so much more competition in California for jobs. I have heard many saddening stories that many social works face and I know things may be tough but I also do believe that it will be rewarding.
I was so bummed that I did not get to go hiking at all this summer. I've been determined to get on track to hiking again especially since the last time I went hiking I almost didn't make it all the way up. I keep telling myself I am going to start and never seem to get around to it. Well I hope your enjoying your weekend. Best of luck in this course.

    4. Hi Carly Beasley,

Yes, it can be really tough especially now that i have a child of my own, it makes me double think it. Although what keeps me going is the fact that I know Im going to get these children out of those horrific lives they live in. Well now that you mention hiking in those places, Yosemite might just be like a walk in the park to you... I bet it was beautiful in Washington, i could only imagine.. But to be honest i really don't remember what trails, i was just so worried about making it through them. When you do get a chance they will give you a map and on it will show a lot, but i suggest doing the ones with the waterfalls they are great. Juggling school, work, and a baby is going to be challenging but i know in the end i will make him proud, but thank you, same goes to you.

I'm Shannon. I am currently too working full time and going to school, so I can relate to having to take online courses, but you being a mom as well as maintaining school and work, kudos to you! I think that any woman maintain while pursuing school, work and raising a family needs to be told how amazing she is, so keep up the great work.

I also wanted to just to give a little a little advice, since you are looking to become a CPS social worker. Keep an eye out on the county website, they are always hiring. CPS recently hired a good amount of people to man the phones and take calls for people reporting child abuse. So just watching the website and applying for anything you qualify for. That way once you have your BA, and is ready to apply, you can use some of the people in the office as references. I hope this thought helps.

  17. __Seems I Got It Working__Repost: Clem

Thank you for your service! I also don't have a favorite book, but I do love to read to my niece. You can't go wrong with pizza, everyone loves pizza! It's interesting that you mentioned bell pepper and onion, I've never thought of putting that near my pizzas. I'm more of a cheese only girl. It's so cool that you have a home in the Philippines, how far of a trip is that? I hope you and your wife get to travel your dream trip soon, that would be awesome!

    2. Hey Clem!

I hope you have been well!

I am super excited and glad that you are in this class with me! I hope you had an awesome summer, based on your Facebook photos, I can tell you had an awesome one!

After reading your post, I feel like we never got a chance to talk and get to know one another! That made me sad, but thats okay since we are in this class and I get a feel for how you perceive things over others.

Anyways, its awesome seeing you in class bud!

    3. Thanks for that sentiment Elizabeth.
The pepper and onion creation was a shock to my wife as well but, when she tasted it, she came around. We use to do only cheese as well. Yet overtime, we found cheese pizza dulls the palate.
As for the Philippines, the flight is roughly 12-14 hours and then, depending on traffic from Manilla, a 2-4 hour drive to Santa Maria Bulacan. Bulacan, the province where my wife is from, is where the house and lot resides.

      Mike Kwon!
Always a pleasure sir. I look forward to the great things ASI has to offer the campus in 2015-2016 (I've seen how busy you've been). The summer was quiet well, as I hope was for you. We'll have plenty of time this quarter to converse. I look forward to it.

  18. Hello everyone!
My name is Jazmin Suarez. I am 21 years old and am from Oxnard, CA. I moved to Bakersfield eight months ago when I graduated from Moorpark College with my A.S. degree in Criminal Justice. It definitely has been tough adjusting to living in a new city specially with this heat! Back home, I lived ten minutes from the beach so the weather was different and it has made it very hard for me to adjust.

This is my second quarter as a junior at CSUB. I am majoring in Criminal Justice and my minor is psychology. I plan on receiving my bachelor’s and continuing my education either in sonography or law school. I know those two subjects are completely different from one another but I’m still contemplating what to do after receiving my bachelor’s degree. I have worked as a legal assistant for an attorney for several years and I really love working in this field which is why going to law school is one of my top choices.

I am taking an online class because it is very convenient specially when I am working a full time job. The little time that I do have is used for school, homework and wedding planning. I am getting married in seven months so a lot of my time has been consumed by wedding planning, which I never knew could be so stressful!

I personally do not have just one favorite books but am currently reading The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman and have enjoyed reading the book so far. My favorite food is Mexican food. I’ve had people ask me what my favorite Mexican restaurant is and I always say my mom’s kitchen. I miss my mom’s cooking even more now that I am a couple hours away from home but thankfully I learned most of her recipes prior to moving out here.

I have traveled to Washington D.C., Washington state, Chicago and Mexico. My next trip will be with my fiancé for our honeymoon. We will travel to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic so I am very excited for that trip and cannot wait for these next seven months to fly by.

During the summer break I took a few trips to Disneyland and also back home to visit my family. I pretty much stayed busy with work and moving in to our new home as well as trying to stay out of this heat. I like the summer but it really has never been my favorite season so I really am looking forward to winter and the holidays.

I look forward to getting to know some of you through this course and wish all of you luck with your courses this quarter!

    1. Hello Karina,
Thank you very much! I am very excited for my honeymoon. I have heard that Punta Cana is beautiful. I agree, that is why I would want to pursue an education in law. I want to be able to help others and defend them/their rights. Thank you!

  20. Hello everyone!

My name is Elizabeth Manjarrez. I am 21 years old and I'm from Delano, Ca. Delano is about 30 minutes away from Bakersfield. I was born and raised in Delano. My entire family has lived in Delano for the past fifty years and I love it here!

Since I do not live in Bakersfield, I have to commute to school three to four times a week. I've been commuting to school for the past three years and this will be my last year. I am a senior at CSUB majoring in Children and Familiy Studies and minoring in Spanish. I plan on receiving my bachelors in the spring of 2016. My main goal is to become a speech pathologist for children. I plan on completing my masters at either SDSU or Chico State after graduating from CSUB.

I am taking this class for two honest reasons. The first reason is that the course was online and was so much more convenient for me since I work full time and attend school full time. My second reason is because my future job will require me to write plenty of reports. I want to build up my writing to be stronger. I also feel I have to get more practice with my writing. I always felt I was a strong writer, but I do not improvement.

I'm going to be quite honest, I do not have a favorite book. I love to read books, but I can't chose only one. I can read one book then quickly change to another book and genre; I love mixing it up. I prefer to read to my niece though. I think it's very important to read to children because I believe it expands their vocabulary. The great thing is my niece looks forward to reading every evening with me.

My favorite food is augachiles! They are so delicious! Augachiles are raw shrimp cooked in lemon and chile. Many people add cucumber and tomato to their dishes to add a better taste. Although in general I love seafood. I prefer to eat seafood everyday if I could, but my parents do not allow me. They say it contains too much cholesterol, which is entirely true.

Over the summer I went to Las Vegas, Nevada to celebrate my 21st birthday. It was so much fun and enjoyed myself. The only downfall on my trip was the 115 degree weather. I like to tell my family I was a fish that weekend because I was in the pool everyday for hours. I also went to the coast a few times and it was fun. I took my niece with me almost every time and had a blast. When I go to the beach I prefer to go with family and little ones, it makes the trip more enjoyable. I'm a huge family girl so family is so important to me. Overall, my summer was great!

Now, let's get this quarter started strong! Good luck everyone!

    1. Hello Elizabeth!
I just turned 21 as well and took a trip to Vegas over the summer. Its awesome to hear that you had a great trip. I hope you achieve your goals to getting into the masters program at either SDSU or Chico. I love augachiles also, they are my favorite thing to order when I go to Mexican restaurants. Good luck on your studies here at CSUB.

    2. Hi Elizabeth!
I love augachiles! They are so good! I wish I knew how to make them myself and I would eat them more often.

  21. Hello everyone.

My name is Victoria Lee. I am senior here at CSUB and I am majoring in Business Management. I am 21 years old and I was born in San Diego, but moved to Orange County when I was 3 years old. I moved here to Bakersfield when I was 15 years old so that I could live closer to my relatives. I didn't think I would like it here until I lived here for a few years. As i grew older i learned the importance of being closer to family.

This is only my 3rd online course, but I enjoy them much more than on campus courses. It allows me to juggle work and school more successfully then on campus classes do.

I honestly could not tell you what my favorite book is. I love to read, therefore it makes it very hard to choose just one book. It is very easy for me to get lost in a book and block out the rest of the world. I love all genres of books. When I start a book, of any sort, I can't seem to put it down until I am completely finished with it.

My favorite food is sushi. I love it! If I could I would probably eat sushi 3 or 4 times a week but I don't have that kind of money. I would have to say that my favorite roll would have to be the blue fin tuna roll from Kanpai. It is delicious!

The farthest place I have ever traveled is probably the Bahamas. It was so beautiful there. I remember the clear, warm water and that I could see right through the water to the bottom of the ocean floor. I would love to go back there someday. Over the summer I went to Las Vegas with my friends and family. It was a blast; we all had a terrific time. I also went to Mammoth Lakes with my friend. We went mountain biking, fishing, and hiking. It is truly another world when you are up there, It is magnificent. I had a wonderful summer, although I wish it could've lasted a little bit longer.

  22. Hello!

If you are a new student to CSU Bakersfield, welcome! If you are a returning student, welcome back!

My name is Mike Kwon, a senior and philosophy major with a concentration on Pre-law. I transferred to CSU Bakersfield Winter of 2014. From then on, I have grown to love the campus and love interacting with students. Because of this, I ran for student body President and was elected for the 2015-16 academic year. My role as President of the student body has been a most enjoyable one. Any opportunity that I can get to interact with students, I take instantly.

As this is my last year, I truly wanted to benefit the students at this University and change the culture of programs and advocacy related to student rights. This is one of the main reasons why I decided to take an online English class. Because this class also qualifies for a GWAR class, I decided to take the class instead of taking the exam.

In short, I love to interact and communicate with students. I love to share my ideas, as well as facilitate new ideas on changing the campus culture. I always try to balance all things in which I am involved in and strive to maintain a quality education, as I pursue a future in law.

After CSUB, I plan on going to law school in southern California and hope to represent families and children through the process of either separation or child custody. After working in a diverse field, I hope to become a judge in a courtroom and apply justice and equality until I retire.

    3. Hi Taylor!

      I hope you're having a wonderful weekend!!

I met well over 800 students for two weeks because of elections! I appreciate your support during that time, it means a lot to me and my team! I started from a community college in Santa Clarita but then transferred to CSULA for a quarter. Then I decided to transfer again to CSUB!

  23. Hello everyone, my name is Jazmin Flores. I’m from La Quinta, California. I have been living in Bakersfield for a little more than two years, and since then I have been attending CSUB. I’m majoring in sociology with a minor in criminology. My goal is to eventually become a social worker through the program that is being offered at CSUB. This quarter I chose to take an online course, in order to time balance school, work, and not miss out things I enjoy.

One of the many things I enjoy doing is exercising. For most it’s boring and truly tiring, but I enjoy the idea of being healthy, staying healthy, and eating healthy. I usually run about four to five days a week before I get my day started. I also enjoy writing music, it’s a hobby I recently picked up during the summer. So far, I have written five songs. Two songs I wrote for my one year old niece, which helps me tremendously to calm her down as I sing to her. It works! Also, during the summer, I spent most of my time taking trips in and out town. My friends and I went to the beach, six flags, and spent time with family and friends from my hometown.

The farthest I have gone is Chicago, Illinois. Every couple years, my family and I take trips to Chicago to visit family. Hopefully, I get to go beyond Chicago next summer or in a couple of years, somewhere like Spain, Argentina, and Germany.

Well here is a little bit about me, I am looking forward in knowing about you all!

    1. Welcome Jasmin,

I'm a transfer to Bakersfield as well (2013) from Sacramento. It's taken me a couple years to settle in. How much further is your time at CSUB? Inspiring that you write songs, I bet your niece love to here you sing. Sounds like you had a really eventful summer. Looking forward to future conversations of the course.

  25. Hello my name is Carolina Pimentel. This is my first quarter at CSUB and I’m very excited for this new journey in my life. I’m a transferred student from Bakersfield College. I’m majoring in Psychology with a minor in CAFS.

I currently work at Wonderful Preschool in Lost Hills as an Associate Teacher. I love working with children; the definitely keep me laughing and I love watching them grow throughout the year.

I decided to take an online class because it is the most convenient as a working student. I’m able to attend class and work Monday through Friday without any issues.

After completing my Bachelors, my goals for the future is to work towards my Master’s Degree in Educational Counseling and one day work as a counselor at a Community College or University.

My favorite food is pasta and salads. My favorite restaurant is Olive Garden. I always get ask if I’m on a diet because I’m always eating some sort of salad. I’m not on a diet, I just really like to eat salads. Especially when the salad has cheese and a very good ranch.

The farthest place I have ever traveled to has been to the island of Hawaii. I visited the island of Oahu this past February. I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to go to Hawaii as a work “bonding trip” with my director and colleagues. It was only a three day weekend trip but I definitely had the best time of my life. I hope to one day go back and visit different islands.

    1. Hi Carolina, my older sister is currently going for her Master’s in speech therapy. Have you given any thought to which school you would like to attend? I’ve also been to Hawaii, and I stayed with my softball team in Oahu. I really enjoyed seeing Pearl Harbor, and the food was pretty awesome. I hope you had a chance to try shaved ice with condensed milk, one of my favorite things there! Good luck this quarter!

  26. Hi all, my name is Taylor Williams and I was raised in Lake Isabella. I played college softball for a couple years and then I transferred to CSUB. I’m a Biology major with minors in Math, Chemistry, and Criminal Justice, and I will be graduating after this Fall quarter. My goal is to become a doctor, specifically an orthopedic surgeon, and I am currently in the process of applying to medical school.

Some random, interesting facts about me: I’ve traveled to Hawaii a couple times with my softball teams, but the last time I traveled internationally was when I went to Mexico as a kid. I ride horses and coach softball, and I am a huge pug fanatic. Some of my favorites: band – Led Zeppelin, movie – One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, book – A Clockwork Orange, food – BBQ ribs, board game – Candyland, candy bar – Hershey’s Cookies & Cream.

Over Summer Break, I spent a ton of time working as a babysitter and at the brewery in Kernville. I also began the medical school application process, and I was able to spend some time with my family. For fun, I went to Pismo Beach and the LA Natural History Museum with my boyfriend, and I went to Morro Bay with my family.

I’m taking this course because I need a year of English to meet the prerequisites for medical school, and an online course fit well into my busy schedule. My hope is that this course will help me improve on my writing skills. I look forward to working with you all this quarter!

    1. Hi Taylor,

I'm Shannon, first off I want to say congrats on applying for Medical School & graduating this quarter, that's awesome. I hope that you get in. I wanted to know what school you transferred from? I also wanted to know what made you want to be an Orthopedic surgeon?

Look forward to speaking with you during class.

    2. Hi Shannon, Thank you, I appreciate it! I transferred from Notre Dame de Namur University (up by San Francisco) and the University of La Verne. I have wanted to be a doctor for a long time, and I decided that I wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon after I had the opportunity to shadow one in Bakersfield a couple summers back. Good luck this quarter!

  27. Hello,

My name is Shannon Forbes. I am a 23 year old transfering junior from Cal State Northridge. I am originally from Bakersfield, CA, but choose to try and pursue schooling outside of town before coming to CSUB. I am currently a Psych Major with a minor in Sociology.

I working full time at the department of human services, that is why I choose to complete this class online. Online classes give me the flexibility to work more during the week and focus on school at night, so I prefer to take online courses.

My summer consisted of transferring schools, moving back into town, and going to Texas. Texas is the furthest that I have travelled. I enjoyed my experience and plan to return there very soon. In Texas is where I found my favorite food (Chicken) is prepared the best. I am currently exploring to see if that is somewhere I would possibly like to live after i finish school.

I can not honestly pinpoint what my favor book is. I love anything with a lot of suspense and a good love story. I have recently begun to like autobiographies, typically those written during slavery. I took a class about a year ago that was geared toward detecting slave novels and being to follow in love with the writing style, I would have never known that literature can “ talk back to each other,” without taking that class.

I hope this quarter I am able to pick up some useful writing tactics, and create better writing habits. I feel that sometime I tend to write the way I speak. Hopefully this is the class to do it !
