Weekly work...

These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline each week.

First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.

Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS' PART THREE EACH WEEK.'

WEEK THREE BLOG ENTRY

1. What is the greatest single song of all time and why?

2. Do you have a memory that is directly linked to a song?
For example, you are on your first date and the Katy Perry song Dark Horse plays on the radio three separate times during the evening. So now whenever you think of the date, you are reminded of the song, and vice versa.

  1. The greatest song of all time is performed by The Grateful Dead and written by Robert Hunter. This song is “Ripple”. Later on in life I understand/interpret deep meanings in each verse. It’s now integrated into my life’s journey.

    Lyrics: link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFsbAuX9P4w)

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

    It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
    Perhaps they're better left unsung
    I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air

    Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
    Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

    Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
    Nor wind to blow

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home

I treasure this song and its link to earlier memories of a dear friend. This is my interpretation.

The song tries to connect to me. A message the sender wants me to understand and hold true. As you can see from the second verse this thought is not theirs but passed down from those that came before. To me, it is not a faith or a religious doctrine. It is a higher spiritual center, a universe of shared energies trying to come to light. He (writer) can’t confirm the message and maybe it would fall on deaf ears; maybe the message is a hoax; he cares not to evaluate it, he just wants to fill air with it.
It’s a ripple, be it thought or experience, ripples come without cast stone or blowing wind, meaning stuff in life just happens, sometimes it wasteful to find cause or reason. Ask for help if in your life if happiness has not filled your cup (you will find it: happiness) but at times when alone you may need seek assistance. When you do find happiness, hopefully the cup remains full (chances are you will lose happiness once found but, you will find it again [always be hopeful]). The energy of the universe is all around us, came before us, and will be here when we are gone. Drink from its fountain while you can. Experience life in all its offerings. The time from my birth to my death is no simple path. It’s (hopefully though) a long journey. I’m my own person, so my travels and experiences influence and shape my view towards the world. Each of us has an individual script for it our path. You will make your mistakes so just own them and learn from them and they will be your guides (typically your only guides). Every decision leads you down a path; try to follow paths using the right decisions, because when mistakes are made they are yours alone. We must deal with the consequences. If the path was easily understood then, but yet, it is not and even advice won’t always get you where you need to be. Stay positive, we’ll all get through it.

Ah, my friend Jerry. He was a military but wore a peace sign pinned to the inside of his lapel. He enjoyed The Grateful Dead and when he passed I remember this song. I think of him now and then and his gentle ways. How life will come, and life will go.

Now off the somber subject and onto another song that ties into a memory, Hey Eugene by Pink Martini (it is really funny and good). It was with a girlfriend prior to my second wife. My boss introduced me to Pink Martini at that time and that song we played over and over on a Napa, Sonoma, and San Francisco traveling weekend. So when I remember it, I remember her and vice versa. By the way, I never play it anymore now that I’m married again (chuckle).

    Enjoy!

    1. Ah, Clem!

I'm lost for words. I know that I should be commenting on your post that both helps and acknowledges the beautiful piece that you provided to other students, but I think it's more important for other students to listen to it and capture the same feelings that you did. Am I wrong? :)

    2. Mike Kwon,

You probed through words and found meaning my friend. The search is for music that is right for each individual. A personalized dietary plan for mind, body and soul. Music should ensnare you. With so much music in the world, a song that communicates to a person the way this one communicates to me is out there. Music will have different meanings at different times in our lives. Music, its dialog, and you blend like combining oceans. For example, the Indian and Atlantic Ocean off the Cape of South Africa combine. Here, the currents collide with froth and foam to produce a diverse and abundance of life. The search for music, is a search for song/songs that can do the same for our physical and emotional worlds (our individual external/internal oceans). Something extraordinary happens when we find such a connection, felicity.

The search can be just as rewarding. Enjoy!

  3. This is probably the hardest question yet! I am not a music fanatic, but I do typically love any kind of country song as long as the content is clean. Beyond that, my favorite song is usually which ever one is stuck in my head on a given day. However, I thought about many of the songs that I enjoy, and I believe that one of my favorites is probably "Don't Blink" by Kenny Chesney. If you have not listened to this song I highly recommend it. The song starts with an old man being interviewed on his birthday and answering a question about the secret to life. The man begins to tell how life passes us by faster than we expect from being a child taking a nap to his kids growing up and even his wife dying.
This is one of my favorite songs not because of a special memory but because of what the song reminds me of. Even on the bad days or the days that I wish I could just be done with school and move on to the next stage of my life I am reminded that life goes by faster than expected. When I take the time to think about it, the song is right. It seems like just yesterday that I was graduating from high school or starting my job as a pastor or watching my sister get married but all these things are now in the past. Even though this song is hardly ever on the radio now, I love when it randomly comes on because it reminds me to enjoy every minute of life, even school. Hopefully it does the same of you!

    1. Hey Janel, I too love that song and am glad to hear others do as well. I absolutely agree that time does go by faster than expected sometimes. To me, it still feels like yesterday I was in middle school running around on the playground. I've had many great experiences in my life, and am still amazed when songs such as this one bring up all of those old memories. It makes you want to enjoy every minute of life because someday, even this will be a memory. Well thank you for reminding about this song, it's been a while since I've heard it on the radio as well. Hope to hear more from you!

    2. Hello Janel, I hadn't heard this song before so once I started reading your blog entry I had to google it and listened to it. I really enjoyed this song. I feel as though the concept of this song, that life truly goes by quick, is something many of us know or hear other people tell us but don't really take the time to sit back and think about it. This song has made me really think back to past and realize how fast life happens. It feels as though some accomplishments and bad times occurred not that long ago and when I think about it, many years have passed since some of those events. Thank you for sharing this song!

    3. Jesse, that is why I love this song so much! It feels like everything in my life from 13-19 is all one big bundle of time that happened yesterday and at the same time feels like it was forever ago! I am glad you were able to remember this song and all the fun memories that it brought to your mind!
Jazmin, I am so glad that you googled this song after reading my post! I was not sure how many people would have heard of it since it is an older country song, but it brings up so many memories that I just had to share it! Hope you had fun listening to it, and maybe it will become one of your favorite songs in the future now!

    4. Hey Janel,
This song is one of my favorite songs by Kenny Chesney. Many of his songs make you think about life and living in the moment. Most of us get caught up with school and work that we forget to actually live and appreciate the present. On my blog I posted a song that is similar to this one. It is called "You're Gonna Miss This", by Trace Adkins. I am not sure if you have heard it before, but I recommend that you give it a listen. I am sure you will enjoy it! Thank you for sharing a beautiful song.

    5. I think I totally agree with you Janel. I love music and I had a very hard time finding a song that I could say "this is the greatest song". Specially since I am able to connect to a number of songs that bring back memories. I've actually heard Kenny Chesney's song "Don't blink" and although I understood the concept of the song, I never thought of it as much. You've definitely given me a new perspective on the song.

  5. To me, the greatest single song of all time would have to be Alive In The Lights by Memphis May Fire. I first heard the song when randomly surfing YouTube for music and little did I know, I would find my favorite song of all time. The lyrics are absolutely powerful and every time I hear them I am reminded of myself growing up. Right from the start of the song I feel as if they knew my childhood struggles of never fitting in. I have always gotten a vibe that I'm different than everybody else especially since my tastes were always seen as weird and were never the popular ones.
The Song is about the singer, Matty, telling the people who told him he couldn't become a musician to look at the changes he's made through his group's music. He makes it clear that the spotlight is where he is meant to be and that this is reality, not a dream. This song was my inspiration when I was playing in a band, and it still brings up those memories to this day. My favorite phrases from the song are “From the beginning I knew I was different. I embraced, but you didn't” and “It may not seem right to you & you might not approve but it's real. This is the only thing that makes me feel”. I always get chills down my back when I hear these lyrics because it describes how I felt not too long ago. I usually listen to this song whenever I go to the gym because of how motivated it makes me feel whenever I listen to it. This song is absolutely amazing, and I highly recommend you guys give it a listen!

    1. This is very interesting. I enjoy the melody and the point where is slows but, fortunately I clicked a YouTube video that showed those powerful lyrics. And it amazed me. And to read the reviews, how strong the words and music is (the words are very powerful and actually suits the forcefulness of delivery). How easily it touched them emotionally. I can see why you found it powerful as well. It contains things all people can relate too. Jesse, thanks for sharing this.

    2. Hey Michael, glad you gave the song a listen! I too agree this song contains emotions all people can relate to, and is the reason why I encourage others to give it a listen as well. Their southern inspired style of playing tied with the overall strength of the delivery made an interesting combination that I simply could not get enough of. Thanks for your feedback, and have a great day!

    3. Jess, I love that you posted a song that was able to help you through hard times. When I think back on the struggles I faced, there are always some key songs that pop into my head that were my motivation to push forward even when it was hard! I had never heard this song before today, but it was very interesting! Thanks for sharing it!
Also, that is so cool that you where in a band! How long did that last, and what type of music did you play? I was never very musical as a child so I have always been interested in hearing how other people started using music to express themselves!

    4. Hey Janel, we lasted for about a year and split up due to our differences in the direction we wanted the band to go in. We mostly played Japanese Rock which was interesting to say the least. I wanted to play more symphonic/melodic metal while one of the others wanted a more punk style. We were brought together by anime and used the music commonly found in it to express ourselves. It was nice while it lasted, and even met my girlfriend through the band, so I'm thankful for being in the band. Hope I answered your questions haha.

  6. The greatest single song of all time would have to be Lucky by Jason Mraz featuring Colbie Caillat. I first heard this song when my boyfriend and I were on one of very first dates. We have been dating for three years now. Many do not know our love story, but every time someone else asked about it, I am always happy to share it :)
When I was six and he was seven years old, we were miniature bride and groom in a wedding. We both had crushes on each other, but we never told each other. Later on through the years, I was looking through old pictures I found the pictures of us together. I always wondered what happened to him or where he was. Little did I know he was located in Bakersfield. I live in Delano, so I wasn't sure how we ever meet again or I would ever see him. The unexpected happened and I saw him at a local church event. At first, I was too scared to go talk to him and when he saw me he kept looking at me like he remembered who I was. He then came up to me and asked me if I was in the wedding with him when were younger. I smiled and said yes. We began talking when I was 16 and he was 17. I am now 20 and he is about to be 21. We are both in college together and both majoring in Liberal Studies.
Every time I hear this song, I am reminded on how amazing falling in love can be unexpected. This song talks about how lucky I am to be in love with my best friend and how lucky we were to be where we were at the same time and place.
Many people have songs of their own that describe an experience, memory, or feeling when hearing song lyrics. This is the power of words.

    1. Hello Brittany, I as well have a song that reminds me of how my boyfriend and I fell in love. We also share a long term relationship of 5 years and we also both go to college. My song is a rap song so it doesn't really describe our love story but we both really liked that song when it came out and we were barely dating so to me it represents our love story. Now every time I hear that song I get flashbacks of all the ups and downs we have had in our relationship and how far we have come so to me it represents our strong relationship.

That is such a cute love story. It sounds like it is right out of a romance novel! My mom is also a huge fan of that song. Maybe for the same reasons you are. 8. The greatest single song of all time would have to be Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle due to the emotion involved in this song and how genuine the lyrics are. I'm sure many of you have heard this song at least once in your lifetime and if you haven't I would highly suggest going online and listening to it. The lyrics are beautiful and it truly is the perfect song for a father to dedicate to his daughter.

The memory that is directly linked to this specific song for me is of my dad. When I was a little girl my dad would sing the Spanish version of this song to my sister and I. I always knew that one day I would dance this song with my dad on my wedding day. Unfortunately, my dad was diagnosed with colon cancer when I was in elementary school. A couple years later, my dad's battle with cancer was over. This December will mark 7 years since my dad passed away. I am getting married in 6 months and this song continues to pop into my head a lot more recently. I get very emotional when I listen to this song specially because the lyrics really express how a father feels about his "little" girl and make me think back to all the memories I had with him. I will always treasure the memory of my dad signing this song to me and this song will always hold a special place in my heart.

Congratulations on getting married soon! I am sure he would be very proud of you.

    2. Hello Jazmin, Im really sorry to hear about your fathers passing and reading your post brought tears to my eyes. I actually had not heard the song before so I looked it up and listened to it. It is a beautiful song and I can see why it is the perfect song to dedicate to a daughter. So for your wedding just think about how happy your father would be to see you get married, he might not be there physically to dance the song with you but his spirit will be there to show his love and happiness for you. Thank you for sharing that I know its a sentimental topic but its also a powerful story to describe the song.

    3. Hi Jazmin, I too love this song because I think it so perfectly depicts the beauty of a Father's love. 9. I don’t have a favorite greatest single because I like a lot of different genres of music therefore it would be really hard for me to choose one song. However I do have a song that brings up a lot of memories every time it plays. I been dating my boyfriend for five years and when we first started dating we both really liked the song Say Something Baby by Drake. This song is old now so it hardly plays on the radio but every once in a while it will play on Pandora. My boyfriend and I started dating in 2010 when we were both juniors in high school and now five years later we are both seniors in college. So every time this song plays I see flashbacks in my head of all the moments we’ve shared these five years. There’s been a lot of ups and downs throughout these past five years so whenever this song plays I feel butterflies in my stomach and a warm feeling knowing that through the good and the bad we still have each other and we have made it this far. This song to me is a representation of our love because when it plays we both look at each other share a big smile and begin to sing it. It takes us back to the moment we met and bring us back to how far along we have come. Another song that also brings a lot of memories is the song Forever Young by Jay Z this song always reminds me of my high school graduation. I really wanted them to play this song for my high school graduation because to me that was the start of becoming an adult and I wanted to be forever young. Also because I agree with a lot of the lyrics and I think it’s a perfect song to describe how one should have a positive mindset and believe that they are forever young. Once again here I am five years later about to graduate and I know that this song will once again be playing in my head. To remind me of all of my accomplishments and how easy it is to live forever young.

That is so awesome you two have been together for so long! Especially during high school and college, it is hard to keep up with everything and that can be hard on a relationship. It is also really sweet that you both have such a strong connection to that song. I still listen to old Drake, and I love that song as well. Congrats on almost graduating!

  10. Picking just one song is so hard! I have about 8,000 songs in my iTunes library. My parents and I search for CDs at yard sales, swap meets, and stores like goodwill. We have made quite the collection. Although I can't pinpoint the absolute greatest song, I would say that How to Save A Life by The Fray has been one of my favorite songs since it came out. I'm the kind of person who likes to listen to depressing songs when I'm sad. Every time I'm sad, this song is my go to song. It doesn't really hold much more significance than that. I just like the melody and the words. It has a calming effect on me.

I also have a lot of songs that are linked to a memory. One in particular is kind of an odd linkage. The song Wild Ones by Flo Rida featuring Sia always makes me think of the Hunger Games. When I was in high school, I always read books while listening to music. At the time I started the Hunger Games series, this song was really popular, and it was on the radio all the time. It played constantly while I read the Hunger Games; sometimes I even put it on repeat! After awhile I got sick of the song and stopped listening to it. Later on, it came on my iPod when I had it on shuffle, and I instantly thought of the Hunger Games. I didn't even realize that listening to that song so much while reading would always make me remember the trilogy when I listened to it. Even today if it happens to play, I still flashback to reading the Hunger Games.

  11. The greatest song of all time is “You’re Gonna Miss This” by Trace Adkins. The reason that I chose this song is because of the life message that it teaches to those who are so motivated to grow up. Many times we become so focused on the future and where we want to be, that we let the time pass us by and we forget to live in the present.
One memory that I associate with this song is transitioning from a teenager into an adult. I remember in high school I used to think that I had everything figured out; I couldn’t wait to be 18. Once I turned 18, I couldn’t wait to be 21. Now that I am 22, I wish that time would slow down. I will be 23 next year and graduating from college. I remember listening to this song a few years ago and I felt like Trace Adkins was singing to me and telling me to stop being so eager to grow up.
My sister recently graduated from high school. I remember my mom calling me one day to tell me that she and my sister had got into an argument. My sister was upset that my mom didn’t let her go out. She had posted on facebook “I can’t wait to be 18 so I can move out” (typical teenager thoughts). I posted this song by Trace Adkins on her page. Even though she didn’t comment on it, I know it made her think. Now she is 18 and in her first quarter at Channel Islands. She called me one day and told me she was scared for the future. She cried that she wanted to come home because she missed my mom and I. I sent her the link again and she texted me that she was sorry for not listening to my advice about life being hard and expensive.
This song is unique in which it will make you reflect on your life. I highly recommend this song to everyone. Hopefully it will help you see that life isn’t always about getting married, having babies, buying a house at a young age. Although those are goals we all have, our time will come. Live in the moment and don’t let life pass you by. Time is the most important thing. Once it is gone, you won’t get it back.

    1. Hello Patricia,

I enjoyed reading your post. I agree with you 100%! We, as adults get so caught up in wishing for a future that we forget to enjoy our time right now. In order to make a great future, we have to build up ourselves right now. We forget to enjoy the little things! I am glad to hear your sister has someone like you. Sometimes we need to hear advice from others that are older than us that are more experienced with life. I remember having those thoughts and thinking, "everything is going to be so much easier when I turn 18." I was dead wrong. Now that I am 20 years old, I look back and think I should be enjoying more of my time now before it is gone.

Thanks for posting this! It should be a great reminder to all :)

    2. Hey Patricia,
I myself love this song. I can totally relate to this song. When I was young I always told myself that I couldn't wait to be 18 (if only now I could go back to being 16 again lol) so I could be independent. I wanted to go off to CSUN and at the end I couldn't find it in me to make the move. When I look back I remember towards the end of my high school days I dreaded school now I wish I could go back and have easy homework instead of all the stress with midterms and finals. This song is a great song because it reminds us to enjoy everything because we eventually are going to miss this.

    3. Oh my gosh I love that song! It's so sad in a way, I almost cried the first time I ever heard it but it's so true. It always reminds me to be thankful and not to take things for granted. In high school I was in such a rush to grow up and now here I am, my senior year of college, wishing I could go back in time.

    4. Hello Patricia,
I love this song, I am a huge country music fan and I have always loved this song. It is so true, time really does fly by and you don't realize how much you are gonna miss the time that has gone.

    5. Patricia,

Everything you said is something I tell my friends all the time! A girl I went to high school with is 20 years old now with one child, another on the way, she is married, and they just bought a new house. Sometimes when I think about her or a few other of my friends that are engaged or have children, I wonder why I'm not there yet? It seems like a lot of people I grew up with have grown up so quickly, but I try to remember that I just started my 20's. This is the time for me to live my life and have fun. Time flies by too fast already, and I really want to enjoy everything while I can. Plus, bills suck.

    6. Hi Patricia, this is a fantastic song with a great message! Great choice! It definitely shows how fast life can go and how we need to stop and appreciate what we have in front of us right now. We are always looking to the next step in our lives.

  13. I believe that “El Vals De Las Mariposas” is a great song that many Hispanic females will agree with. This song has a lot of meaning and significance to it. When a young girl turns fifteen, her birthday will be celebrated differently than past birthdays. It is a celebration that signifies the girl going from childhood into womanhood. The song is used in many quinceneras because of its traditional value. This song is danced in front of the guests at the celebration. Although not many girls have a quincenera, “El Vals De Las Mariposas” is still widely known to the Hispanic culture.
I really enjoy all the songs of the 2000’s because it brings back memories of middle school and high school. A song that brings back a lot of memories would be Single Ladies by Beyoncé. I chose this song because in 2008 when I was a freshman in high school, we had a science project where we had to change the lyrics of a song and turn it into a teaching lesson. My group and I changed the lyrics to chemical reactions. Instead of singing single ladies, we sang about the different types of chemical bondings. This project is definitely one to remember because I was so nervous to sing in front of the class. Apart from that, it was a good way for me to learn the subject matter.

    1. Hi Sylvia, indeed you hear this song in many quinceaneras because its more like a ritual to play it on this special day. I did not play this song for my fifteen but yes its very common. This is funny and I would be in the same shoes I would of been shy to sing it as well. That is a great idea for a project never thought about doing something like that.

    2. I myself am very familiar with this song. Till this day when I see a girl dancing this song with her father or with her group of friends it makes me tear up. Not only that, but this song itself reminds me of all the great memories I've had at my cousins sweet fifteen.

    3. Hi Sylvia!

I definitely agree with you! Every Latina girl is familiar with this song. It symbolizes the transformation of a little girl turning into a young woman. When ever I see any girl and her father dance to this song I cry instantly. I unfortunately did not have a quinceañera, but I can only imagine the emotions. I'm sure this song bring great memories to those that had the opportunity to dance with their fathers. I will hopefully experience this feeling on my wedding day when I dance with my father.

  14. Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone had a wonderful week!

The greatest single song of all time, to me, is “Nella Fantasia” (“In My Fantasy”). It is a song sung in Italian that was first composed by Ennio Morricone and lyrics by Chiara Ferraù.

I was introduced to this song by a couple of friends that insisted that I watch an episode from “Korea’s Got Talent”. The episode highlighted a young Korean student that lived a life of hardship and blew both the judges and audience away by his rendering of “Nella Fantasia”. As I watched the episode, I got very emotional and automatically fell in love with the song. I did some research afterwards and found out that the highest record of sales, for the song, was in South Korea! The piece is most attributed to Sarah Brightman, the famous classical soprano artist. I went home to show my mom and she got emotionally as well and, as did other 3 million South Koreans, she decided to buy a CD herself of the song.

I truly love this song. It gives me so much hope and it acts like an encouragement booster to do well in my studies and all extracurricular activities. For some reason, although it does not necessarily say this in the song, I feel like the piece is telling everyone to love one another and promote and push for peace.

Watch the video with this link:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SIxSbTSBTc

This song really inspired and moved me because of the beautiful melody and, based off of the person performing the piece, it truly is beautiful and amazing to listen to as well as imagine “a just world, where all live in peace and honesty.”

Thanks so much for sharing. (It was good to revisit).

  15. The greatest single of all times is Always and Forever by Luther Vandross. This is my all-time favorite song because it has a nice melody to it. The words are really nice as well. This song just never gets old. I can listen to it on repeat and never get tired of it. The rhythm to it is nice and calm which makes you feel relaxed when you listen to it. I feel as if this song is really catchy wherever I hear it the song seems to always capture my attention. This song is considered an oldie therefore I am sure back in the day this song was one of the greatest hits for a while. These types of songs are what I like because the words have a true meaning and you can relate to them in some sort of way. There are many people who don’t like love songs or oldies but I am one of those persons that enjoy good old love songs.
Every time I hear the song La Macarena it reminds me of kindergarten when we would dance to this song. This dance was well known back when I was in Elementary school because all the kindergarten classes would dance to this song. Every time this song comes up I can picture myself as a kindergartner dancing to this song. I don’t usually dance it when I listen to it now but sometimes there are times where I do get into the mood and dance La Macarena.

I enjoy oldie music, its very different from todays music but i must say thats a good thing. Love songs are great, especially those with great meanings like the one you chose. Its amazing what music can do. Bringing you memories from kindergarten is awsome because those are great childhood years. That song is also a classic, im glad you still find joy and some dance moves when listening to it, there is nothing ever wrong with dancing...

  16. One of my favorite songs is Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson. When I first heard this song, I was only in middle school. I remember saying to myself that I would somehow make a change in the world. Without knowing my future, my family and I were faced with a difficult situation when my mom was diagnosed with cancer. I had just become a high school student when my mom got sick. Due to the chemotherapies and medications, my mom was not able to do many chores when she was at home, and my dad was working most of the time in order to support us. I was scared and confused because I did not know how to help my family. It was until, I heard Man in the Mirror. When the song came out in the radio, I realized that life was not easy for everyone, but I wanted to make a change in my family’s life. Every day when I would get home from school, I was responsible for taking care of my mom and my little brothers. I started taking my mom to the hospital for her chemotherapy sessions. I was also cooking for my family, doing all the chores at home, and making sure that everyone was doing good. I did not mind helping my family because it was making my mom get better. Even though it was difficult to take care of my family while being a high school student, I was able to successfully make a change in my family's life. Man in the mirror is a great song because it inspired me to become a better person and to understand that in order to make a difference, one must be willing to sacrifice something in order to help those in need.

  17. I’d like to think that we all have one particular song that takes us back to amazing memories. I know I have a song that always leaves me reminiscing. I get nostalgic when I hear the song Pocket full of sunshine by Natasha Bedingfield. I remember during my senior year this song was my ringing tone and my cousin Melitza who I was always with me would get so annoyed every time someone would call me. At first I liked the song because it was catchy but then I noticed that it played during many occasions leaving this song to trigger many memories. When I hear this song for example it reminds me of the time when I went prom dress shopping. When this song came I remember I was waiting for my friends to switch tunes to a different station but instead they cranked up the volume and we began singing out loud (which know that I think about I get a bit embarrassed). It also reminds me of when Melitza and I went down south to go get a glimpse of the area we were supposed to move too. Melitza was admitted to Long Beach State, and I had plans to go off to CSUN. I remember on our way down there this song played at least five times and not once did we get tired or annoyed of it. This song is also a go-to song of mine. When I get my panic or anxiety attacks I usually throw on some workout gear and will try to head out for a jog to avoid triggering the attacks. This is one of the songs that motivate me to run. Not only does this song have good memories but it also has bad memories. At one point in my life I was super skinny because of my red and white blood cells. Growing up I was super skinny and now I can say I am healthy. Growing up I was constantly told by my aunts that I was too skinny and pale. Now that I am healthier I am told that I gained so much weight and that I need to get it under control. At times when I go back to looking at how thin I was I start to feel that maybe it is true that I did let myself go but when this song comes on or if I simply play it puts me in a great mode and leaves me forgetting everything. Just with hearing “Do what you want, but you're never gonna break me, sticks and stones are never gonna shake me” make me realize that I am me and it shouldn’t matter what others say or think.

  18. I'd have to say that one of my favorite songs has to be the song Daughters by John Legend. This song is one of my favorites because he talks about the love he has for his daughters. Im the youngest of three girls so my father has had nothing but girls around until... my brother came along, but still we have been considered his favorites. Everytime i listen to this song it reminds me of all the pictures we've taken, daughter daddy pictures all over our living room, and all the stories he would tell us when we were younger. John Legend really expreses himself when when he talks about fatherhood, this reminds of the bond that my sisters and i have with our dad because we were all being protected by him, and we always looked up to him for everything. Our dad has always been considered our hero because even when we thought our day couldn't get worse he'd always find as way to make us happy. This song brings a lot of emotion to my sisters and I because now he faces a horrible disease but we know that through it all we will always have our "Papa" every where we go we will carry this beautiful memory of our father. Picking a favorite song was a little difficult but this song really stand out to me which is why i chose it as my favorites.

I'm the only daughter in my family so when even I hear and father daughter song it touches my heart dearly. It's so great that you have many lovely memories and pictures with your father; parents always bring the best out of us and make all our days better.

  19. There are several songs that I consider the greatest songs of all time, but since I have to choose ONE than it is definitely “Somewhere over the Rainbow sung by Israel Kamakawiwo”Ole. This is an all-time classic, which has been resung by many music artists. I’m sure you all know. I personally prefer his version because his vocals simply make it very peaceful and calming. The lyrics is also beautiful and motivational especially when we feel that our dreams are unattainable.
Well the real reason I enjoy this song is because it reminds of my soulmate, Diego. We met through a mutual friend and I remember refusing to give him my number because he seemed to “cocky” for me, I simply did not like that. After two months I finally I gave in.
On our first date we went to Yogurt Island, he taught me shuffle (popular dance at the time), and we eventually ended the date at the park at five in the morning just talking for hours. We would do this repeatedly and on every date he would sing, Somewhere over the Rainbow. He has never sang any other song, but this one.
We are currently a couple of hours away from each other, he lives in Los Angeles and I’m here. So hearing that song makes me happy and reminds of him.

Up to this day, he believes that my friend did not want us to meet because he does not believe that someone would say no to him.

The song is very meaningful in ways that it makes us think if our dreams will ever become a reality. Your story was beautiful because neither of you guys gave up on each other. Thanks for sharing your story and hope you have a great week.

  20. This is such a hard question! I have so many songs that I could listen to over and over again, but I think that has to do with what I'm doing at the time or what kind of mood I'm in. One song though that I could listen to at any time, if I really had to narrow it down, is Sunshine by Atmosphere. The beginning of the song is basically about him waking up from a really bad hangover and forcing himself to get up and go outside even though he’s miserable. He ends up realizing it’s a beautiful day outside and can’t ignore the sunshine. I didn’t choose this song because I have to get over hangovers often! It could be about any type of bad day, where you simply cannot ignore the powerful sunshine and the beautiful outdoors. When he finally stumbles outside he says, “All of a sudden, I realize something. The weather is amazing even the birds are bumpin.”
He continues about all the things he notices while riding a bike around town. They are all small, simple, everyday actions, but all positive things we may normally take for granted. The chorus, my favorite part, says, “Sunshine, sunshine, it’s fine. I feel it in my skin, warming up my mind. Sometimes you gotta give in to win. I love the days when it shines. Woah let it shine.” These lyrics are my favorite because it reminds me to just have a good day and always be thankful. No matter how bad my day may be going or how low my mood is, I should be “Forgettin’ all the stress, thanking God I’m alive”

  21. The best song hands down has to be "I want you back" by Jackson 5. The lyrics are so catchy and so easy to single to. This song brightens up my day when ever I hear it. The moment it plays on my phone I instantly start smiling really big and sing a-long so loud my throat begins to hurt. If the song comes on while I'm driving I start to dance and sing like no one is watching. I sometimes catch other cars staring, but I smile and continue away.

This song is close to my heart because my grandmother loves this song. Every time I hear the song I picture my grandmother smiling and dancing. My grandmother is a Spanish speaker and does not speak any English, but she loves the beat. It amazes me the power music has to touch any person, no matter the race or language.

  22. This is a very hard question to answer. I listen to all types of music and I could listen to a lot of them over and over again. However, if I had to choose just one song it would be, "Yesterday" by Atmosphere. I remember the first time that I heard this song and I thought the whole time that Slug, the lead singer, was talking about his girlfriend. He talked about how he was walking down the street and thought he saw someone. He talks about how he wanted to shout out their name but didn't. He says "Yesterday, was that you? Looked just like you. Strange things my imagination might do. Take a breath, reflect on what we've been through. Or am I just going crazy 'cause I miss you?" Throughout the song he talks about all the things that he would like to talk about with this person and the things he wished he didn't do. The whole time I was thinking that he was talking about a girlfriend that he hadn't seen in a while and that he missed her. By the end of the song, I finally learned who he was actually referring to in the song when he says, "I thought I saw you yesterday. But I know it wasn't you, 'cause you passed away, Dad." This is when you finally understand the song and realize what he is talking about and when you can fully appreciate the lyrics of it. I love this song as well as many others by Atmosphere.

Of course like everyone else, I assumed he was talking about an ex girlfriend that he was heart broken over. But when he says dad at the end it completely changes the meaning of the whole song and has such a stronger, different meaning.

Growing up my dad used to have a collection of a CD series called Barrio Music. Barrio Music was made up of a variety of 80's and 90's songs. Although there was a number of songs my dad would play, the one that brings back most memories is Total eclipse of the Heart. When the song would come on he would motion his hands as if he were playing a drum set. Even though the song talks about love and heartbreak, I've learned to appreciate the music (the intensity of the melody) and passion that the singer expresses through the lyrics. I come across this song on a frequent basis. It's one of my favorite songs to sing on Karaoke nights.

  27. The song that means the most to me is “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin. I grew up listening to classic rock because of my parents, and Led Zeppelin became one of my favorite bands at a young age. My dad would tell me stories of his high school football years, and he would tell me about how he would lie on his bed before each game and listen to bands like The Who, ZZ Top, and Led Zeppelin to get pumped up and focused. When I got my first iPod, I knew exactly what I wanted to put on it. I made a playlist of about 20 songs that included songs from AC/DC, the Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin. “Kashmir” was the last song in the playlist. Throughout high school and college, I listened to that playlist before every softball game. It’s been a couple years since I’ve played softball, but every time I hear that song, I’m transported back to the days when I played softball. I remember many of my successes and failures, and I relive my favorite moments. During the whole song, I’m back on the softball field. Every person has at least one song that makes them relive their fond memories, and for me that song is “Kashmir.” It is a song that represents mine and my dad’s days of playing sports.
